Texting losing popularity due to chat/messaging possibilities on smart phones

There was a time when text messaging was so commonplace that people were talking about the way that it would change the language. People were saying that it would completely change the way that we talked and wrote. Just a few years later and text messaging is already starting to look like a thing of the past as the rise of smart phones has made it unnecessary.

The main reason that texting is losing popularity is that now that most people have smart phones there is simply no need to. Texting became popular because it allowed people to communicate with the cell phones for a lower cost than making a phone call. Now that people have smart phones this is no longer necessary as people have access to email, chat and instant messaging. Most people find these to be far more convenient to use than text messaging so people are choosing to use them.

The other reason that texting is losing popularity is that texting is not really a great option for business purposes. A lot of people used it for business in the absence of other options but the need to limit the number of characters that you could use made this a less than desirable way to communicate. At best a lot of text messages sounded unprofessional and at worst they weren't understood by the people who were receiving them. A big part of the reason that smart phones became popular in the first place is that they eliminated the need for texting.

It is likely that even fewer people will be sending text messages in the future as most data plans discourage this. In most cases you will have to pay an extra fee, usually ten to twenty dollars a month if you want to send text messages with your smart phone. Currently most people are paying this so that they can continue to use the service but this will likely change in the future. As people start to realize that they have other options and that they don't need to send text messages it is unlikely that they will continue to pay for the service.

One of the other disadvantages that text messages offers that will likely resulted in their becoming less common is that you can only send them to other mobile phones. With things like instant messaging, chat and email the person receiving the message can get it on their smart phone or their computer. This makes it much more useful since you will be able to communicate with more people. Ultimately the days of text messaging are probably numbered. Really it only remains now because there are still quite a few people who don't have smart phones, once this changes texting will likely come to an end.
